Health Insurance Requirement

KansasCOM requires all students carry health insurance. To meet this requirement, each year all registered students are automatically enrolled in KansasCOM’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Students who have comparable health insurance coverage, meeting all KansasCOM requirements, may waive out of automatic enrollment in SHIP coverage during the open waiver period at the beginning of each academic year.

Detailed information about the SHIP plan, including information regarding enrollment and waiver will be provided to you via a link to your institutional email. Once you receive the email notification, you will activate your account. Once the account is active, you will be able to log in and access the waiver and enrollment options. Please check with the Office of the Registrar at [email protected] if you did not receive a link via your KansasCOM email.

Open Enrollment and Waiver for the KHSU-KansasCOM sponsored SHIP policy is from approximately August 1 through the end of July.

Students who do not waive out of the KHSU-KansasCOM SHIP by the deadline will by default be enrolled in SHIP and remain enrolled through the end of the plan year, and thus will be responsible for the associated premiums.

The following are the minimum requirements for students’ personal health insurance coverage:

  • Coverage must be active and continuous (no break or termination) for the entire academic year

  • Coverage must be ACA (Affordable Care Act) compliant

  • Maximum benefit must be unlimited

  • A provider network within 25 miles of the KansasCOM area for primary routine care, specialty, hospital, and diagnostic care

All students must report any break in coverage or change in health insurance while attending classes through the site mentioned above. Dear Student Doctors,

We hope this message finds you well. We're writing to inform you about the upcoming annual insurance waiver and enrollment process, which is expected to begin on or around June 30, 2025.

Insurance Waiver & Enrollment Process

As part of our commitment to supporting student well-being, KHSU-KansasCOM offers a health insurance plan through a contracted vendor designed to meet the needs of our student body. If you already have health insurance coverage that meets specific requirements, you may waive the school-sponsored plan by providing proof of your existing coverage. All students are required to complete the insurance waiver or enrollment process each academic year, regardless of whether they plan to enroll in the school-sponsored plan or have alternative coverage.

To be eligible for a waiver, your alternative coverage must meet the following minimum standards:

  • Continuous coverage with no breaks or terminations for the full academic year

  • ACA-compliant (Affordable Care Act) coverage

  • Unlimited maximum benefits

  • Deductible of $1,000 (single) / $3,000 (family) or less per person, per policy year

  • U.S.-based claims processing; the underwriting company must be U.S.-owned, -operated, and -headquartered and comply with all federal laws

  • A provider network within 25 miles of KansasCOM for primary, specialty, hospital, and diagnostic care

  • Coverage in all 50 states

The enrollment and waiver process will begin on or around June 30, 2025. The process will include an email link where you will be able to create an account, and either enroll and pay in the insurance plan or submit a waiver if you have your own plan that meets the requirements. More information about the waiver submission process, required documentation, and deadlines will be shared shortly.

Online Payment for Insurance Enrollment

As a reminder, insurance enrollment fees will continue to be paid directly through a secure online payment system. This process allows you to submit payment quickly and conveniently at the time of enrollment. Please note: Insurance premiums will not be billed to your student account. Payment must be made at the time of enrollment.

2025–2026 Insurance Premium

  • Annual Premium: $4,447.00

  • In-Network Deductible: $400

  • Prescription Co-Pays: $30 / $40 / $75 / $75 (at pharmacies contracting with Aetna)

Subject: Student Health Insurance Enrollment and Waiver Process

Dear Student Doctors,

We hope this message finds you well as you wrap up your current term and prepare for the year ahead.

This is a reminder that the annual insurance waiver/enrollment process for the 2025–2026 academic year will open on Monday, June 30, 2025, and remain open through Monday, August 4, 2025. All students are required to complete this process, even if you have private insurance that meets the University's minimum coverage requirements.

You will receive an email from AHP (Academic HealthPlans) with instructions on how to either waive or enroll in the student health insurance plan. Please watch your inbox during the enrollment window. If you are a new student, you will need to create an account. If you are a returning student, you should have access with your logon and password from the previous year.

Failure to complete the waiver or enrollment by the deadline may result in administrative action, including a potential hold on your account or removal from enrollment. It is essential that all students complete the process to remain in good standing with the University.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,

Freda
