Posted:  February 25, 2025

As part of a larger effort to create an improved examinee experience, the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) program will launch a new registration portal on March 10, 2025. The MyUSMLESM Portal will replace the existing NBME Licensing Exam Services (NLES) platform to support Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) exam registration and related services for students and graduates of medical education programs accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).

Existing NLES examinee accounts will be automatically transferred into the MyUSMLE Portal. Until March 10, examinees should continue to use the NLES platform for all registration and related services for Step 1 and Step 2 CK.

IMPORTANT! While these changes are being implemented, all registration services will be temporarily unavailable from 9:00 p.m. ET on March 9, 2025, through the morning of March 10, 2025. During this period, you will be unable to access your account in the NLES platform or the MyUSMLE Portal. Services are expected to resume on the morning of March 10, and you will be notified when the MyUSMLE Portal becomes active. If you are testing on March 10 or March 11, please plan to download your scheduling permit by March 9 to avoid any potential service interruptions on your exam day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as we work to improve the user experience.

You may sit for the USMLE examination.  It is not required at KHSU-KansasCOM, but depending on your residency location and/or specialty, you may want to take the exam.  Please reach out to your faculty mentor, Clinical Education professionals, the Associate Dean for Clinical Education, or the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine to determine the best course of action for you relative to USMLE examination.

How to Register for USMLE Step 1

1.      Visit the NBME Licensing Examination Services. Click first-time user, enter your name, SSN and medical school information.  It is important that you enter your name exactly how it appears on the identification that you will present the day of the exam (examples: driver's license, passport).
2.      The NBME will email you your USMLE ID and a temporary password. This may take up to one business day.  Please keep your USMLE ID number as you will need it to register for future exams.
3.      Once you receive this information, log in to the menu item: Apply for the USMLE.  You will be required to change your password at this time.
4.      Once you are successfully logged on to the NBME Interactive Website, click “NEW" to start a new application.
5.      You will be asked to read the application instructions. Then click “next".  Select the examination you are applying for (Step 1, Step 2, etc.).
6.      Follow the instructions and complete the application.  Choose the testing window recommended by your Dean/Clinical Education.
7.      You will need to pay the registration fee via credit card.
8.      Print the Certification of Identification and Authorization form.  Sign the form and attach a photo.  Scan the form (in color).  Submit the form to the Office of the Registrar via an Academic Records Request.  The Office of the Registrar will process your authorization and send the paperwork to the NBME for you. Upon receipt of your application materials, the NBME will process your registration and verify your eligibility.  This can take up to two (2) weeks.
9.      Afte the NBME processes the form, the NBME will email you with your scheduling permit. This confirms the three-month window in which you can schedule your exam date.
10.  To schedule our examination test location and date, visit the Prometric website (http://www.prometric.com/usmle). You can only schedule exams six (6) months in advance, no sooner.

Certification of Identification and Authorization form

  1. Create your NBME account by following the “How to Register for USMLE Step 1."  Complete the CIF as a part of that process.
  2. CIF: Complete the form and hand sign and attach your photo.  Scan (do not take a photo) the document and send the (hand signed and photo attached) scanned document to the Registrar via a Guardian Academic Records Request.  The scan should be in color.  NOTE: I received word from the NBME that you may use an electronic photo as long as it is clear frontal view of the face.
  3. The Registrar will contact you for identity verification, process the CIF, and send directly to the NBME.

The CIF processing time may take up to two weeks during high volume times. NBME will contact the student by email when the form is processed.  Students may also check their status on the NBME Licensing Exam Services (NLES) website.
