The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that requires KansasCOM, with certain exceptions, to obtain written consent prior to the disclosure of a student's education record. KansasCOM, however, may disclose basic "directory information" without consent that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy.

Directory information at KansasCOM includes, but is not limited to:

  • Student Name
  • Address
  • Telephone Number
  • Email
  • Photograph
  • Date and Place of Birth
  • Major Field of Study
  • Grade Level
  • Enrollment Status
  • Date of Attendance
  • Degree Sought
  • Expected Date of Completion of Degree Requirements and Graduation
  • Participation in Officially Recognized Activities
  • Degree
  • Honors and Awards Received
  • Previous Education Agency or Institution Attended

KansasCOM allows students to either release ALL or NONE of their directory information. The standard is set to release which means that unless you Opt-Out, the listed information about you may be released.

If you choose to opt out, please select the option below. By Opting Out, you may be required to take additional steps for some medical school processes. The Office of the Registrar will reach out to you each time a process requires your release.

    Directory Information Opt-Out Implications
Opting out of the release of Directory Information prevents KansasCOM from acknowledging the student's enrollment to interested third parties such as employers, parents, and spouses. It also means that the students name will be omitted from publications, academic honors lists, Commencement programs, etc.

    To Opt-Out of Directory Information:

Step 1:  Click the link:  KansasCOM Reporting and Services Request System to access the form.

Step 2:  Go to Report Type and choose the FERPA Information Opt-Out from the dropdown.

In the Details section, please list that you choosing to Opt-Out of Directory Information. This is a required section, and you cannot submit the form without completing it.

Step 3:  Complete and submit the request.
